A Life Less Ordinary
What is my unique journey to becoming a celebrant? Interesting question indeed. I've certainly done a lot in my time – from telegram messenger in the 1970s to university researcher, with fascinating stops including the Equal Opportunities Commission, newspaper work, even a brief stint as a tax inspector (definitely wasn't me!), support work with adults with learning disabilities, secondary school teaching, and founding a theatre-in-education company.
The thread that's run through my entire working life has been a genuine love of communicating with others, performing, and helping people share their stories.
From Academic to Celebrant
My most recent role was as a university researcher and lecturer, where I needed to embed performative elements into my teaching. There's something about performance that absolutely thrills me – sharing stories, helping people understand new perspectives, and creating moments that matter.
But what truly drew me to celebrancy? Several things, really:
-
My Passion for Performance
I've been involved in theatre and performance since I was three years old. That love of entertaining an audience, of creating moments that captivate and inspire, is central to who I am.
-
Fascination with People
My teaching was in social sciences – all about understanding how people behave, interact, and express their individuality. I find people and their stories endlessly interesting, and I genuinely love helping them celebrate who they are.
-
A Touch of Theatrical Flair
I really enjoy dressing up – a smart bow tie, elegant waistcoat, perhaps a touch of whimsy. I believe celebrations deserve someone who looks the part and brings energy to the moment.
-
Storytelling as Art
Whether academic storytelling or a good shaggy dog tale (my preference over quick one-liners), I love seeing how stories unfold and helping others share theirs.
Values That Guide Me
I'm genuinely interested in people and find them endlessly fascinating. This comes through in my commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion – I served as an LGBTQIA+ staff representative for five years and am passionate about creating ceremonies where everyone feels truly welcomed and celebrated.
Life is full of colour, richness, sound, and movement, and I want to help my clients capture that energy, explore it together, and share that wonder with others.
Why Rapport Celebrancy?
As the name suggests, I want to build genuine rapport with my clients. When we work together, you should feel the ceremony is being led by a friend who truly understands and celebrates who you are. Our planning process isn't just about logistics – it's about creating connection and ensuring your day reflects your authentic selves.
Every ceremony I create is rich in the individual personalities of the people involved. Drawing attendees into direct participation enhances that sense of belonging and celebration that should surround life's most important moments.
